Backlog of yard waste should be removed by Labor Day: The backlog of yard waste that has accumulated in Madison over the past 2 months will be cleared by Labor Day, at the latest, according to an e-mail sent to constituents by Madison District 3 Councilman Jerry Jennings. According to Jennings, “This problem is city wide and with all quadrants of the city being equally impacted. No one is being deliberately denied pick up services.”

The e-mail continues:

There are approximately 13,000 individual households that receive service. Note that apartments and commercial businesses are responsible for their own commercial trash pick up.

The reason for the erratic level of service is that a new contractor, Allied Waste, underestimated the volume of waste to be removed at this time of year. Consequently Allied did not start their service with adequate numbers of waste trucks. Compounding the situation was the severe wind storm 3 weeks ago that produced considerable additional debris requiring pick up.

THE FIX!

Allied started with 3 rear load trucks and 1 knuckleboom truck. Allied has added 1 additional rear load truck and 1 roll-off (large waste container) truck. Allied will add 1 additional knucleboom truck in near future.

City of Madison has placed 4 knuckleboom trucks in service to supplement the Allied fleet. The Madison trucks will continue until the back log of curbside waste has been picked up. Madison will be reimbursed by Allied Waste for this assistance.

It is anticipated that the waste pick up backlog will be cleared by Labor Day at the latest.

For council district #3, the existing back log will be picked up by Saturday, August 27. Current regular schedule of Monday pick up will resume on Monday, August 29.

COMING CHANGES!

· Yard waste pick up will revert to 1 run per street each week, same as when the city provided service.
· New once per week schedule is currently being evaluated to optimize route efficiency.
· New route plan will be implemented on Monday September 12, 2011.
· Prior to Monday September 12, 2011, the city will announce route plans.

WHY THE CHANGE TO ALLIED WASTE?

The city decided to contract out the yard waste pick up service as a way to better serve the residents of Madison. Really that is true! By contracting with Allied Waste the city has saved about 20% in costs. In addition has freed up 8 Public Works employees to perform other duties, such as road pot hole repair; drainage ditch clearing, sports field maintenance, etc. at no additional dollar cost to the city. A BETTER RETURN ON YOUR TAX DOLLARS.

I want to thank all for their patience and forbearance during this difficult transition period. We will establish a reliable and efficient yard waste removal operation that Madison residents have come to expect and deserve. Please feel free to share this email with anyone you choose.

Jerry Jennings
District #3 councilman
Madison, AL
